The Santa Cruz Progressive Email List (SCPEL)

The Santa Cruz Progressive Email List (SCPEL) is a moderated email forum for sharing action alerts, information about events, meetings and projects, and other announcements of interest to the Santa Cruz county-wide progressive community.

The list is low volume--principally because it does not include "Please forward to everyone" kind of messages. SCPEL messages always have some explicit Santa Cruz connection.

How to post

Email your post to santa-cruz-progressive-email-list@googlegroups.com.

Please write a good subject line that summarizes your post. If the post is about an event or has a deadline, please include that information too. Examples:

If you include images or attach documents (PDFs, graphics, and such) with your post, also include at least the basics in just plain text in your message. Some people's email programs don't show images, and some people don't open unsolicited attachments.

Also remember that not everyone has broadband Net access, so try to keep the size of your post down by not including large images or documents.

Lead time for posts

Moderators try to post messages at least every 4-6 days. Submissions sent on short notice may end up being too late.

With a good track record of on-topic posts, you can request "self-moderated" status. When you are self-moderated your posts go straight through to all our subscribers without first needing approval. Just drop me an email. My address is bva@cruzio.com.

Criteria for posts (or Why didn't my @#$^%&*#! message get posted?)

SCPEL is a moderated list so that it remains low-volume and on-topic. Here are the criteria for SCPEL messages:

There is some explicit Santa Cruz area connection

Reject: Global warming is poopy/rally in SF (it doesn't matter that we are all affected by global warming!)

Accept: Global warming is poopy/rally in SF, anyone want to carpool?
Accept: Global warming is poopy/rally in SF; local planning meeting Wednesday
Accept: Global warming is poopy/rally in SF, does anyone know where to park?
Accept: Watsonville City Council hearing on annexation
Accept: New Chomsky book, who wants to start a discussion group?

The Santa Cruz area requirement is stretched sometimes for central coast issues, since there isn't much information about that area.

Commercial posts (money required for participation) meet at least one of the following:

Updates on a local issue or project are from an "official" source, infrequent and not commentaries

Accept: Here's the latest on our downtown ordinance protests

Reject: Here's this week's update on our downtown ordinance protests
Reject: Here's what I think about the downtown ordinance protests

Posts regarding political campaigns are announcements of endorsement of local candidates or ballot measures, events, or volunteer opportunities--not persuasion pieces or propaganda (in the most positive sense of the word :)

Note: A local group announcing its endorsements of local candidates and ballot measures is fair game. A state or national group doing the same is not list-appropriate, but a local chapter of such a group is fine. Local rules!

Other notes

The criteria can be a little tricky, so by all means ask if in doubt.

If there are multiple posts that are essentially the same thing, they might not all get posted.

If you wonder about the fate of your message, by all means inquire and hold us accountable. We aim to be objective and consistent, but blow it now and again.
